Aug. 9th, 2006 10:59 pmI rested my eyes like a sensible type, but that didn't preclude going out. They seem a lot better.
The £190 secondhand laptop with all the software had gone, but there was a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 - as old as the hills and very like the one that fell, £150.
I was controlled. I did not jump on it like a starving cat on a little crunchy squeaky thing. I was sniffy and haggled (even though I have the carrier and spare batteries, etc. and I knew some interesting things about it.) Anyway, I got the seller to add some software and switch the CD/DVD player from my dead laptop to its semi-twin - the clone had a CD drive but no DVD player. But it has those nice powerful built-in speakers.
So now, basically - at this stage I have an excellent portable battery or mains DVD player, no additional speakers needed - with a modem and word processing capability (Windows XP and Word) It saves on floppies - and it's shortly to be made internet-ready but all the changes in the ISP are making it tricky.
I tried it out on "The King and I" and it is a good DVD player.
I really, really needed a good DVD player and I am saving "Soul Music" until I have met my grim set of deadlines. (If I can control myself that long. I would have played it straight away but I wanted to make sure that the player didn't damage discs.)
Advice please, what do you think of Firefox?
