But no, 3 phone calls. So I gave up.

Stayed in for breakfast. Yay, leftovers. Went out for dinner, which included an ibuprofen and ice tea, so I could get caffeine and hydration and painkiller and stop the withdrawal-headache. (I was doing fine till about 5pm, oddly. *sigh*) Talked mostly about electric bikes and whatnot, instead of politics. (I maintain that electric bikes are likely to be great, but anyone who thinks "take a bike/leave a bike" stuff is gonna kill busses does not have primary-child-custody of 4-5 year olds, family shopping duties, or awareness of a host of other things that are hard enough with busses.)

Kid is doing better, stomach-wise, YAY! I am pretty sure I have a mild case of it, but as I spent months queasy 24/7 when pregnant, it does not surpass that.

Wrote some flashfic yesterday. AU fanfic based off my kid's unfinished work. So many spoilers, so little sense. At least it was writing, of the "characters insist on having a conversation while I'm in the shower" form.

Very upsetting news from a friend. Please send good thoughts... O:(

Car still not fixed. Dunno if the part came in yet. They're very busy. (If no car by tomorrow, I will ask when they expect to have some loaners, perhaps. Or swipe spouse's mom's car, maybe. Mmph.)

Spouse and kid went to Long Drive which let me introvert a bit, which was nice.

Spouse is trying to sort something out with the online course kid is taking, where one has to have an account to watch the videos -- or even see if there are transcripts -- and the handoff is not clean, and it wants a password. (There better be transcripts, or I swear, I'm gonna find who does ADA suits and I'm going to ask a lawyer to write a note about how the lack of transcripts is non-ADA-compliant. Deaf kids might need this stuff too, and sensory-issue-kids could surely use the transcript option that the d/Deaf would need.

Grrrrrr.)

I continue to putter on the Thing, for now. It's barely creative and that's all I've got just now.

Need to get Arkady Martine's spouse's book from the bookstore sometime, but I have gone and BLANKED on it. Incandescens, what's the name again? Help?

Kid at least seems to be recovering from stomach bug.

The Disabled People Destroy SF Kickstarter*, to produce a disability themed special issue of Uncanny magazine, is up and running here and well on its way to meeting the initial funding goal (about 80% funded with 29 days to go).

And the first of their personal essays on disability and SF is up here, a good piece on Mental Health/neurodiversity** getting in the way of growing up to be the SF protagonist you dreamed of, that the genre allows you to be, so sitting down and setting to work to change the genre to allow for protagonists with MH/neurodiversity. I'm so glad the first piece talks about MH/neurodiversity and invisible disability, as they're the most invisible/most often cured of SFnal disabilities.

* If you aren't familiar with the 'x' People Destroy series, it has already done POC Destroy SF and Queers Destroy SF to significant success. I was initially a little disconcerted it's swapped magazines for the disability issue, from Lightspeed to Uncanny, but the editors of Uncanny have a disabled child and they've assembled a solid team of disabled editors for the special issue, so my worries seem unfounded.

** The author talks about a bipolar diagnosis, but then settles on neurodiversity as their preferred community label. It's a view I have some sympathy with, though it can confuse people about non-MH related neurodiversity.

Sleep would be nice, really.

Bed around 3am. Spouse woke up... I dunno. But then the phone rang, and then I didn't really get back to sleep, and then it's about 7 hours sleep.

All three of us went to the new breakfast place. There were a lot of people around, and it was noisy, and there was Unexpected Happy Birthday Singing nearby which was not a good thing to spring on a stressed sensory-overwhelmed kid. (Honestly, can we get, like, Sensory Issues sections? Y'know, like smoking sections used to be, only quiet and with high booth walls...)

Spouse and kid went out without me to get dinner, and because Dining Room Shut Down; Everyone Eat In Bar Or Right Next To It was noisy, they got takeout instead. But none for me, boo. Oh, well. Excess white rice, duck sauce, and a bunch of cherries. There. Dinner.

Finished an edit thing. Spotted two Labyrinth references. Surprised the tunnel cleaner wasn't in there...

1: Got to bed around 1-something. Did not fall asleep till around 2am.

2: Woke up around 8am, and could not get back to sleep. Alarm went off at 10. Blah.

3: Took car over to the car place. Yay, she started! ...barely.

4: Spouse brought me back, then dropped me and kid off for doctor appointment while he went off to dental appointment.

5: Doctor appointment. I was poked, prodded, heart-beat-listened-to, and sent down for a blood draw to make sure that my blood is doing the right thing. Waved at waitress friend who was in for foot x-ray. I hope her foot is okay.

6: Grabbed a snack at the cafe in the place, for me and kid. Ate outside.

7: Had way more time to kill whilst spouse was doing dental thing and then returning.

8: Went over to nearby restaurant. It is, I note, drizzling. Turns out that the restaurant closes the dining room during lunch hours and funnels everyone into the bar area. Which was WAY TOO CROWDED. I'm not sure there were actually any free tables at all, in fact, and with the kid... nope. So we went and hung out in the hotel lobby next door, where the gal was really nice about it. (They have this huge dining area for when they serve breakfast and they aren't using it for anything, so...)

9: Picked up by spouse. Go to get car. Spouse does paperwork whilst I and kid go to Lunch Place that closes in like 30 minutes. Discover that the car is "stuttering" at really low speeds, and occasionally flashing AWD/Check Oil lights briefly. Get spouse -- who has gone home -- to call the dealership and ask if this is something concerning. They say that they want to see it after we eat. Food is had, and on the way back, at first traffic-light, car dies. Restart works fine. We make it the rest of the way just fine.

10: Waiting room is packed. Message spouse to come get kid. I hang out, do some editing. (People visiting from Pennsylvania had a tire pop off the rim and wound up at this dealership. I eventually chat with them some, plus reassure them that it's a good place.) Eventually the dealership mechanics get to my car and decide that they need a New Sensor Thingie, which will show up Wednesday. They are out of loaner cars till... at least Wednesday. (He hopes he can scare up something for the PA people if their car can't have a tire popped back on properly.)

So that's the state of the world. *SIGH*

Here's hoping it'll make it to the car place tomorrow! (I turned the car on this evening -- after going nowhere all day yesterday -- and got a "grindgrindgrind." I paused, tried again. She started. The clock had reset to 1:00. Um. Mm-kay. I wasn't going far, so spouse could rescue us, and I hoped that it was just that I hadn't driven her all day yesterday. Went and got gas. She ground a little (didn't lose the clock) and started. Got dinner nearby. Re-started car and she groundgroundground a little less than the first startup, but more than the second, and lost the clock back to 1:00 again.

Pretty sure that's "battery does not hold charge; replace battery" indication. ...crap, I'm gonna hafta reset the radio buttons AGAIN. *headdesk*

Tomorrow is ALSO fun because of multiple doctor appointments -- spouse has one pretty far away, and I have one nearby, and there's going to have to be Dropping Car Off, and depending on how the weather is, I might wind up walking back home or something. -_-

Well, we'll see. (Might need a jumpstart tomorrow, depending on how bad the battery is being.)

Have sneaking suspicion I have the kid's -- and spouse's -- stomach bug now, which has Queasiness After Eating. Maybe I should take a ginger pill.

I have been eating these Sungold/golden Kiwis (not the bird) like peaches. NOM NOM NOM. Skin's just more fiber, yay!

Kid might, might, might be recovering from stomach bug. Slowly. Let us hope.

I have complained about a VLACS test where -- and I checked -- none of the answers in the multiple-choice actually fit the material. Plus one of them wasn't in the text material at all and had to be googled up. I mean, it's nice to have research as part of a class, BUT. Y'know?

Online classes that require a separate account to view part of the material are Bad Planning. If they don't also have text, then they are inaccessible to the deaf and that's an ADA violation and I will make grouchy noises because I have developed, over the years, zero patience with hurdles to my kid being able to process required information.

Anyway. Got to bed at 4am last night. Oh, well. ...I need to repair the little holes in that houserobe. O:(

Did STO. It is late. Trying to set up a new ship. UGH. I wish that they'd make it easier to put in all the default buttons like "Evasive Maneuvers" and stuff that doesn't depend on the ship.

Finished Raven Stratagem. There was actually, I think, more hand-holding on the terminology early on. Plus I think the editors got down on their knees and begged for a slightly less high body-count. So if one were cautious, one might dare to get attached to a few characters. Very, very carefully.

Did the new STO mission and that ACCURSED DREADNAUGHT IS TOO BLOODY POWERFUL. I think it's designed to require the blighted extended-engagement weapons from last lightning-fast event thing, but darnit, I do plasma on that ship! So tedious.

I still have to review Extra Virginity as well, but I actually liked that one, so it will take longer to compose….

One of the things I did get done yesterday between work, the ball game, and the Epic Sunburn, was finish a slim book of short stories called A City Equal to My Desire by James Sallis. This wasn’t a book that was recommended to me, which means I don’t have to feel bad about truly disliking it. I found it in a keyword search on the library website for books about ukuleles, and it has a short story called Ukulele And The World’s Pain, which admittedly was one of the better stories in the book despite still not being very good.

From what I can tell, he did pick the best story out of the book to develop into a novel, “Drive”, but it is very obviously unfinished in short-story form. Sallis has a couple of ongoing problems in the short story collection, one of which is that he tends to skip the vital information you need in order to know what the fuck is going on. And not in a “the blanks slowly get filled in” way, or in a “your imagination is more terrible” way (though there is a little of that) but just in a way where like…he says something that you understand to be vital to the story but which is missing context, then spends like a page describing the fucking diner someone’s sitting in, and by then any context forthcoming doesn’t get linked back. It’s like being in the middle of a paragraph when you hit the photo plates in an older book – yes the photos are very interesting thank you but I need to finish the thought you were sharing with me before I go back and look at them. I think maybe he thinks this is challenging the reader but it’s not, it’s just annoying and makes what are otherwise interesting premises totally opaque. I shouldn’t need to work this hard for a story about a hit man who decides not to kill a politician.

If the book had a more cohesive theme in terms of the stories, it might be more readable – he clearly enjoys building worlds and then doesn’t quite know what to do with them once he’s built them, so if this was an entire book of “weird and different worlds” ala Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, I would buy in more fully and I think he would have put a little more elbow in. But it’s not. It’s mostly “here’s a really interesting world and a person living in squalor in it does something while being in it”. Also he appears to be fascinated by describing things that are shaped like pi. And a lot of times it feels like he read a wikipedia article on something and wanted to share some knowledge, so he just kind of built a half-assed story around his wikiwander.

And all of this I would probably let go if say, it was something I was noticing in a fanfic writer, or someone who was just starting out, or someone I felt was genuinely trying to get a point across. But there’s this inexplicable sense of arrogance to the collection, a sort of smugness to it that in professional writers drives me up the goddamn wall. Stephen King sometimes falls into the same trap, where it feels like the author believes they don’t have to respect their readers because they are The Writer.

The thing about volumes of short stories is that you keep reading it because sometimes there is a real gem. And there are one or two good stories in the volume, but I don’t know if they’re worth the rest of it.

So my review I guess is mostly me being annoyed, but it boils down to “If you like short stories in the SFF Noir genre, give it a whirl, but if you’re bored with a story none of them get better, so feel free to skip to the next one.”

Finished Ninefox Gambit today and bought-and-started Raven Stratagem.

Ninefox Gambit seriously harkens to older, "classic" kinds of SF (okay, probably 70s and 80s, when I was reading it...) in that it is perfectly happy to throw you into the deep end of New Terminology and expect you to keep up. You're reading SF to stretch your mind, not get spoonfed! (Honestly, Raven Stratagem is more infodumpy, it feels like. I think the editor was crying at the author.) And it has more modern concepts of worldbuilding complexity, so it's not, y'know, pulp. Even if it is high epic science fantasy universe.

I like it.

I like it despite the fact that the body-count would make the Borg mildly taken aback, or perhaps even be put to shame. Basically, do not get attached. To anyone. I mean, yes, there's a sequel so if you want to take a cautious risk or two, okay, on your head be it. (There is also the occasional bit of body-horror, because the "exotics" class of weapons are, um... ew. At times.)

Anyhoo, it's a well-written book with some seriously weird stuff going on, say I.

In other news, I have apparently gotten the kid's continuing stomach bug or something, except it is manifesting as pain more than nausea. On the other hand, it's the time of Hormones Do Stupid Things That Affect Smooth Muscle, so who knows how that might be confounding issues. O:p

BUT I DID MAKE A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT! For Monday.

Tomorrow, I intend to log in early and DO THE DADGUM STO MISSION. *sulk*
(Also on the to-do list: more ST: Renegades and ST Continues.)

Reminder: I have 3 free short stories at Smashwords, which are pushed to Kobo, iBooks, and B&N among a few others. Plz feel free to check them out. Reviews or stars appreciated. >_>

ARGH!

archangelbeth: Female Borg (10of30)
[personal profile] archangelbeth
Okay, I have set an alarm to call the doctor's tomorrow. *sigh* Let's hope I manage, since there's yet another thing I will have to be driving for.

I did walk for an hour and a half, watching Star Trek: Renegades. (The pre-scrubbing version.)

1: It has a Liberated Borg in it, who got some Very Cool Bits although not as many as I would have liked. He also had one infodump that they should've directed at The New Guy, but they also had nanite SFX so I will forgive this. (...did I mention I am Borg Trash? Ten wants to adopt him.)

2: It has a snarky female captain. I can work with this. They aren't quite writing her as smart as she's supposed to be, but hey, she looks pretty good doing it.

3: After they got the main cast set up, they apparently decided that if they were going to have a secondary character, they might as well make it a female one. I LIKE THIS. Also, that is one buxom Andorian.

4: I'm pretty sure that's a Romulan there. I am on board with this. Chekov, where are you meeting Romulan assassins? ...nevermind. Woman gets very few lines but she is Alertly Present and Kills People Without Hesitation. I believe she's competent and specialized.

5: I will admit, the fight scenes are frequently dubiously-choreographed and a bit muddy. I think the script-writers went "Insert Fight Scene; Heroes [Win/Lose]" for most or all of them. Whatevs. I will watch Borg-boy shoot people with his reconfigurable arm even if the plot is bad.

6: Some of the leaps in logic require a bit of audience-effort, and one of them really needed a clarification in the script, as I was going, "Um, WAIT WHAT HOW ARE YOU BEAMING DOWN THERE?"

7: The SFX are at least TOS level on the ground, and extremely good with the ships. There's one scene with a Starfleet ship [spoiler spoiler] that just looks sweet. Where the SFX get a little clunky is mostly where they're trying to be ambitious, and honestly, there was some pretty clunky SFX in the first Star Trek Movie where the giant space storm was destroying Klingon ships and whatnot, and we will NOT discuss the Weird Bad LSD Trip Warp scene, come to think of it.

8: I think some of the redshirted characters had a lot more that coulda been done with them, but yeah, they had too many characters to drag around everywhere, and needed to chop some down. kinda-spoiler )

9: Apparently the fact that I really warmed up to Soval, in ST:ENT, means that I have a positive reaction to his actor, even when he's playing a human. Took me enough double-takes to decide it really was him!

10: I have seen the serial-number-filing-off stuff on Requiem and am facepalming, with sad snickers. (I really, really think that CBS should figure out a better method of controlling fan-films. Possibly involving licensing-as-AU, some amount of work-for-hire disclaimers, and a buyout option. These things feed a hunger, and I suspect that the hunger grows to encompass available material; I would want to watch official stuff more. Though they really would need to require a ginormous disclaimer like, "There are many timelines. This FAN-MADE PRODUCTION is but one of them. Who knows how the main timeline will go? CBS and Paramount, not us." In a Star-Wars type crawl, even. >_>)

Anyway. It was also a long-drive day (which is why I'm really annoyed that I forgot about calling the doctor, what with nipping out the door fast to get to a breakfast restaurant before it closes), but ze spouse took ze kid to that, and I stayed here. And mostly walked and watched Renegades 1. (Which is better than its promo trailer, actually!)

Please well-wishes for mmegaera, who is getting a lot of biopsies done soon, early.

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

Mostly because I woke up around 2 in the afternoon (having gotten to bed around 4 in the morning) and the kid was probably awake till 5 or 5:30. Then we went... ah, right, Mexican place. Which was okay, except then they TURNED ON LOUD MUSIC and the baby at the other booth yelled baby disapproval and kid had meltdown and we fled. But I did get the headphones cord! I'd wondered if it'd gotten set down ON THE MENU and then folded into the menu and apparently YES! WE FOUND IT! So that was good. So we ran off to Local Americana Food Place where we have our own special booth, practically, and the dining room is frequently all but deserted (or entirely deserted) when we go -- clientele are often up in the upstairs, separated-at-the-atrium bar -- ...where was I?

Oh, right, we went there because there is almost always nice and low-sensory-impact, and it was nearly 5pm by the time we got out.

And then we had dinner just now at 10, and also it is trash night, and anyway I need to call the doctor tomorrow about the bruise to see if I have a vitamin problem or if it's something actually scary. O:p

Still puttering on the almost-no-imagination-required bits that I'm doing for that GURPS thing. Making myself a cheat-sheet for stuff even if it doesn't stay. Hah.

Giant bruise on the back of my arm. No clue how it got there. Similar to one on the back of my calf at one point, which I figured I must've gotten by catching it on the edge of the kid's toy-chest (now a Flat Surface), though I couldn't recall when.

Also a probably unrelated weird bump on the other arm. O:p

Due to sheer paranoia, I think I will call the doctor soon. These are kinda alarming and... really, look more like blood vessels that went splody, more than actual bruise-damage. O:/

Right knee is very unhappy with me, off and on, but I am okay for flat surfaces. I just have to be careful going up and down stairs.

Got to bed at only around 3 in the morning last dark, yay!

Still futzing on that GURPS thing. Which is, upon re-reading, probably quite cool. But entirely undreamedof, and thus probably unwanted, and there are Other Factors. O:p

But it's something I can futz with that doesn't require actual creativity just now. Or at least not plot/character creativity. Mechanics Creativity.

I must get time to watch Star Trek Renegades on YouTube, because it looks like there is a Liberated Borg in it and okay, I'm in. Because I am both Greenblood Trash (Tuvok as chief of Section 31? I'm on board with this) and Borg Trash.

Another thing on YouTube, with HISTORICAL VALUE! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh1Dq6YjFxw

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways to Give:

[tumblr.com profile] readera's partner, J, has been in the ER multiple times in the past three months, and their finances are very strained because of it. They're raising $300-$500 for transportation costs and medicine; you can read more and reblog here or give directly here.

[tumblr.com profile] sleepyheathen needs to make next month's rent and is selling items, offering commissions, accepting donations, and has an Amazon wishlist up. You can read more, purchase, or reblog here, or donate via paypal here.

[tumblr.com profile] tony-in-distress is trying to escape an abusive situation and hoping to take her siblings with her. She needs to raise enough money for a deposit on a safe house for her and her siblings to live in. You can read more and help out here.

Anon is raising funds to help a friend cover debt and pay for legal bills after her abusive husband took custody of their youngest son. You can read more and give here; unfortunately due to Australian law apparently they can't provide much information.

Sarah Sadat had to leave her job recently due to stress and is facing mounting medical bills for a failing kidney and previous hospitalization; she has surgery scheduled for next month, and is fundraising to help cover medical and other bills. You can read more and give to the fundraiser here.

[tumblr.com profile] ohstephyy was let go from a job three months ago and hasn't been able to get another one; there are also other costs coming up to cover. You can read more and reblog here; a paypal address is available at the post.

[personal profile] laurashapiro linked to a fundraiser for [personal profile] kuwdora, a talented vidder who is trying to become a professional editor. She has an opportunity for professional coaching from the editor of Burn Notice and Empire, but can't afford the expenses on her own. You can read more and help out here.

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] tiarasnteakettles who is looking for work as a harpist, including attempting to purchase a harp that would be a massive upgrade from her current instrument and allow her more freedom in performance. You can read more about her situation and reblog here, including links to her Patreon and online store and Paypal donation address.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

News To Know:

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] wanderlust-anthology, an upcoming anthology of reimagined myths, legends, and folklore based on the theme Quests and Journeys. They are looking for creators for this anthology, which will be a full-color printed book with stories, comics, and artwork. You can read more at their tumblr or at the FAQ here; sign-ups close July 30th.

Housing:

Riel is looking for a roommate in Austin, TX to share a townhouse; she and the other roommate (male) are both grad students, and they do have a cat. Riel is very fandom-friendly. Lease starts in August. You can check out the townhouse here and get in touch at ariellayendler at gmail.com.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

Not as crippled by all that walking as I might've been, but legs definitely a bit sore.

Coulda done with getting to sleep before 5 in the morning again.

Have poked at a GURPS thing that who knows if I'll bother submitting. *sigh* But I'll finish it up and see what unwieldy wordcount it ends up being. I should be working on something I can publish myself, like Dragonsmutwhatsmut and CLB, but noooooo.

On Flight Rising, someone bought one of my dragons-for-sale for 175 gems... and exalted him. I cannot even. There were far cheaper dragons around. *shakes head* I am being annoyed all the way to the bank, though. 175 gems is useful. Especially since I am going to need to drop another 1,200 gems on Stained at some point. After I get me a couple of the new Rosette secondary genes. Already scored a Jaguar.

(Someone tell haikujaguar that Flight Rising is stocking her gene.)

Ah, and for the non-Zon among us, some Pick Your Own Vendor links for some books. Not mine. But.

SO MUCH WALKING. Because I walked and ended the workout and walked again and it didn't tip over and @AppleSupport said no, it had to be one workout but you could Pause and ARGH, so I did it AGAIN. And the treadmill does 2mph but the stride-length calculations on my watch think it's like 1-1.5 or something so I walked A HECK OF A LOT LONGER THAN 3.5 MILES. TWICE.

My legs hurt.

Kid continues sick and will need Something to eat before bed, because the takeout ordered was deemed a Mistake and not very tasty. I have marked it as Not Good on the menu so we will remember in the future.

My legs really, really hurt.

I have also been productive in finally mending spouse's pajama bottoms. I need to get him new ones.

My legs hurt so much.

My feet also hurt. So, so much.

Romulan ale was even a challenge for species as stout as the Klingons, who were usually quite resistant to the effects of alcohol. After drinking a sizable amount of Romulan ale in celebration of William T. Riker and Deanna Troi's wedding in 2379, Worf, obviously suffering its effects, stated that "Romulan ale should be illegal", to which Geordi La Forge replied, "It is." (Star Trek Nemesis)
